To look at Evelyn Rabkin, no one would guess that this energetic woman will be blowing out the candles on her 99th birthday cake this year, or that she’d had her hip replaced in 2014 by North York General’s own Dr. Shawn Garbedian.
But as a volunteer motivational speaker for the United Way, Evelyn knows a thing or two about how to inspire people. Her remarkable determination to give back to her hospital, along with the support of her sons Howard and Steven, propelled her to set not just one record, but two.
In 2016, Evelyn was not only the oldest participant in the walk, but she earned the title of OrthoWalk 2016 Top Fundraiser, collecting an impressive $1,416 in support of North York General’s Orthopaedic Care program.
But Evelyn’s generosity didn’t stop there. As a prize for becoming the top fundraiser, she received a brand new Spitfire Scout Deluxe 3 Wheels Scooter, donated by The Mobility Shop. Thanks to the great care she received at North York General and the help of her family, Evelyn felt that she was healthy enough that she didn’t need a motorized scooter. She decided to donate it back to the Hospital so someone else who really needed it could have it.
