“I like bragging about my hospital,” Arpie Mesrobian grins, sitting in her condo in North York. “It’s an overwhelmingly positive place.”
In 2006, Arpie was diagnosed with cancer and underwent a complicated, nine-hour surgery to treat it. She spent five weeks at NYGH – including two weeks in intensive care.
Throughout her time at NYGH, Arpie was touched by the warmth and compassion of the health care team. “I was recovering from surgery and my surgeon, Dr. David Smith, stopped to see me on the way to the airport for a family vacation,” she says. “He just wanted to see how I was doing. He’s my angel!”
It was this level of care that inspired Arpie (already a monthly donor to North York General Foundation) to increase the amount that she donated. What Arpie didn’t realize is just how much that would add up to over the next decade. She was surprised to learn that she has personally donated over $10,000.
“I thought it was just a drop in the ocean, but it adds up,” she exclaims.
Arpie playfully calls NYGH her “second home.” She continues to come to NYGH for follow up cancer screening, recently had total knee replacement surgery, and NYGH cared for her late husband through the services of the Freeman Centre for the Advancement of Palliative Care. NYGH has been a big part of her life, and she is happy to give back what she can.
“North York General saved my life and it’s been here for me ever since,” she says. “It is my responsibility to do what I can to say thanks.”
