Several years ago, Gitta Frazer was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease. Parkinson's is a progressive disorder of the central nervous system that may lead to tremors, rigidity, slowness of movement, gait disorder and a loss of balance. It may also cause memory loss, depression, swallowing and speech difficulties and other problems. Parkinson`s disease is the second most common neurodegenerative disease with 90% of patients aged 60 and up.
Although presently there is no cure, modern treatments and therapies can help people with Parkinson's lead an active life. The inter-professional team at North York General offers a specialized geriatric Parkinson`s clinic combined with educational programming to best serve the needs of patients and families in our growing and aging community.
As a way of honouring her on the occasion of her 74th birthday, Gitta's family and friends are organizing Gitta's Race, in support of Parkinson`s programming at North York General Hospital.
Four years ago, Gitta`s Race raised over $60,000 to refurbish the exercise room at NYGH`s Parkinson`s clinic. This year we are pleased to share that our fundraising efforts will sustain the wholly donor funded Fanny Bernstein Living Well With Parkinson`s Program (LWWP). This is an innovative education, exercise and support program for clients with Parkinson`s disease and their caregivers, where they are empowered to exercise, adhere to drug treatment, use strategies to prevent falls and manage activities of daily livings. But, this innovative programming that so benefitted our mother and many more in our community, would not be possible without donor support.
Thank you in advance for your support!
