“Patients who previously needed multiple plastic bags for their belongings and styrofoam cups for hydration are now being asked to bring their own reusable bags and water bottle,” he said.
It may seem like a small step, but the impact is huge.
Dr. Smith shares that we must evaluate the quality of the care we deliver through a green lens. NYGH can deliver high volumes of quality care to patients, be a good example for the community and protect the environment.
After fielding patient and staff feedback, the peri-operative “green team” is ensuring all individuals can implement their green lifestyles while on hospital grounds.
“Many of our staff are extremely conscious about their environmental footprint and we want to ensure they can come to work and feel empowered to mirror that mindfulness,” Dr. Smith explained.
The peri-operative “green team” recently partnered with North York General Foundation (NYGF) and kitchen services to introduce the new “Roll out the China” initiative, which allowed for the purchase of reusable cups for use across all hospital events, including staff meetings, rounds, events and more.
“Drinking out of a beautiful coffee cup enhances the staff experience, makes them feel appreciated and reduces single-use waste at these events,” he reflected.
On June 7, the peri-operative team gathered for their annual “Picture by the Pond.” Kitchen services were able to literally roll out the china and celebrate a greener today, and tomorrow.
