We recently sat down with Derek Erdman, Co-Founder and President of Multy Home, a leading supplier of eco-friendly floor coverings and outdoor items. As the presenting sponsor of Rally in the Ravine, Derek shares why Multy Home is the perfect match for this year’s event.

Hi Derek, could you please tell us a little bit more about yourself and Multy Home?

Well, I grew up in South Africa and moved to Toronto about 40 years ago. I lived in North York, near Bayview and Sheppard, so I was quite familiar with North York General Hospital (NYGH) growing up. After university, I started Multy Home, which focuses on recycling and converting waste into reusable materials. We’ve built the company over 30 years with a strong commitment to the environment. And even after moving out of the area, I stayed connected to NYGH—my mother volunteered there, and I eventually became a Foundation Board governor. It’s a place that always felt special to me.

What makes NYGH special from your perspective?

From my personal experience and what I hear from others, NYGH stands out for its exceptional care. It’s not just about the building; it’s the people—the doctors, nurses, volunteers, cleaning staff, and leadership—that make it truly special. Although not everyone at Multy Home uses NYGH as their primary hospital, we see a strong alignment in values. The hospital’s dedication to patient care and community mirrors our commitment to our employees and the environment. That’s why we’ve supported NYGH in the past with initiatives like funding pediatric beds and with imaging equipment. Their focus on people makes NYGH a perfect partner for us.

And why did you feel Rally in the Ravine was a perfect event for Multy Home to stand behind this year?

Rally in the Ravine felt like a natural fit for us. It’s an outdoor event, and we’re an outdoor and sustainability-focused company. Walking produces no air emissions, which aligns with our environmental mission of reducing landfill waste and repurposing it into reusable materials. Sustainability is what we truly stand for.

So with Rally just around the corner, is there excitement building at Multy Home?

Absolutely! We have about 150 staff signed up, and they’ve taken it upon themselves to organize fundraising events like bingo and bake sales. It shows that Multy Home is an organization that truly cares about giving back, and that makes me incredibly proud.

Will we see you at the event?

Of course! I’m hoping we’ll have nearly 1,000 people out there this year. Rally in the Ravine is all about connecting people. It’s outdoors, it’s family-friendly, it’s good for the body and mind, and it supports an incredible hospital. What more could you ask for?
