Our 50/50 lottery is a great opportunity for staff to participate in something fun and give back to North York General. It’s also an opportunity to shine a spotlight on the dedicated staff that make our hospital such an amazing place. We sat down with Lavern to learn more about her role at North York General.
Q: Aside from winning, what do you like about the staff lottery?
A: It’s for a great cause. Staff who sign up for it are given the chance to wish and do a good deed, since half the total raised supports the hospital. After I told my colleagues that I won, they felt inspired to join the lottery themselves.
Q: What’s your role at North York General?
A: I work as a Unit Secretary in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). In this role, I register babies, welcome visitors who come to see their babies, show new patients where the facilities are and act on requests from physicians or nurses.
Q: Why did you choose to work at North York General?
A: North York is my community. I grew up here and went to school with most of the people I now work with. It felt like a natural fit for me to work at the hospital.
Q: Describe a time when you felt that you really made a difference in a patient’s life.
A: I like to think that I make a difference in patients’ lives on most days. Recently, there was a really sick baby in the NICU who needed all hands on deck. This meant I had to go beyond my role as Unit Secretary, taking medication over to the resuscitation room or gathering vital items needed for the procedure.
