The opening of the new Steinberg Family Paediatric Centre

Dear Friends,

I am so pleased to share with you a good news story. Today, the new Steinberg Family Paediatric Centre, gracing the 4th floor of our hospital at the corner of Leslie and Sheppard, opened to patients, families and staff. The finishing touches were put on the Centre over the weekend and patients were transported this morning from the 3rd floor, up to the amazing new purpose-built space.

The Steinberg Family Paediatric Centre

I can say categorically that all the planning and consultations with patients, families, staff and physicians paid off. This is a hospital within a hospital designed specifically for children — newborns up to age 18. It is filled with natural light and is welcoming and calming. It will be a place of comfort and healing for the children and grandchildren of this community.

It has so many special features that I could go on forever but suffice it to say the rooms are well appointed and designed, spacious, equipped with interactive large screens and pull out beds for family stay overs. Each room has incredible views and its own bathroom including a shower. The Dr. Noëlle Grace Family Room will be a place for families and patients to gather when not in the child’s room. The Teen Lounge is equipped as a social space and a kitchen to support our Eating Disorders Program. The Paediatric Clinic and Complex Care Clinic are also located within the Centre to foster seamless care. All clinics have been equipped for enhanced virtual consultations with patients and their family members, which is particularly relevant today.

The new Steinberg Family Paediatric Centre is a wonderful complement to the quality, depth, and breadth of the paediatric services that the care teams have always provided at North York General. It has been years in the making but really worth the wait when I saw the nurses, allied staff and doctors this morning breathing it all in and having spontaneous dance parties (and yours truly had a few moves). A video is being created to give you a closer look at the new Centre and I will be sending it out by email in early December.

At the heart of this project is philanthropy and I want to thank all the donors who made this exciting redevelopment a reality! I’d like to acknowledge Charlotte and Lewis Steinberg who provided the transformational gift to wrap up the fundraising goal. Their unwavering support of this community and hospital for over two decades is quite simply remarkable.

At North York General, supporting our children close to home when they need our care is of paramount importance. Our donors have made a world of difference for our children, families and community, for years to come.

Warm regards and #staysafe.
