Sam’s Story:
I Was Shocked to Receive a Cancer Diagnosis at 21 — Thankfully NYGH Guided Me Through It
I never imagined I would have cancer. After all I was only 21 and previously healthy. I was studying computer science at Western University in London and played tennis and basketball. When I wasn’t on a court, I loved to spend time with my girlfriend.
After returning to North York for the summer in June 2018, I discovered large bumps on my neck. I went to my family doctor, who sent me for an ultrasound and then a biopsy at NYGH in July. Shortly after, I learned I had Hodgkin’s Lymphoma (a type of blood cancer that affects the lymphatic system). When I heard the news, it was a shock, and my mind went blank. I just couldn’t wrap my head around the diagnosis because it seemed so improbable to me.
I was referred to Dr. Jeff Silverman in the hematology department at NYGH and received an appointment within the week. The timing was very helpful because as the shock wore off, I started to become extremely worried about what would come next. When I met with Dr. Silverman, he explained that I would need chemotherapy. He developed my treatment plan and I felt safe and reassured under his care.
I can’t even imagine how I would have made it through six months of chemotherapy without the amazing nurses at NYGH, who were there for me every step of the way. Not only were they knowledgeable about the treatment but they were so caring. They gave me blankets when I was cold and medication to manage my nausea.
At the end of six months, the imaging scans were clear, and I felt both relieved and happy. Unfortunately, my peace of mind was short-lived. Only a month after treatment, tests revealed the cancer had come back and I became extremely discouraged, wondering if I would ever be well again. I was fortunate that NYGH connected me with a counsellor at the cancer centre to help me manage my emotions about my second diagnosis.
In March 2019, Dr. Silverman determined a stem cell transplant would be the best course of action, and I was referred to Juravinski Hospital in Hamilton, which did this specialized procedure. Fortunately, the transplant was a success, and I was thrilled to be cancer free! The team at NYGH continued to monitor me after my procedure.
Today, I’m happy to say that I’m still in good health, and so thankful for the treatment I received. Every time I go to NYGH for a check up, I am happy to see Dr. Silverman and my nurse Shabana Dhanji. I think so highly of them and will always be grateful for their tremendous care.
