“As close to ‘home’ as a hospital can feel.”

After a smooth, unplanned homebirth with her first child, Emily imagined welcoming her second in much the same way. But she and her partner also knew that birth has its own rhythm — and if their plans shifted, they hoped to find a hospital that could offer the same calm, confidence, and deeply personal support they had experienced at home.

That’s when North York General came to mind.

Sweet moments in our newly refreshed Postpartum intake and family lounge — just one part of the broader revitalization underway at NYG’s Birthing Centre. Join us in our Final Push as we work to bring the full vision to life for every family who begins their story here.

At the time of her pregnancy, while only living temporarily in North York, Emily and her family’s relationship with NYG had already been shaped by trust. A year earlier her young son had become ill, and in that time she’d experienced firsthand the speed, reassurance, and compassion of NYG’s clinical teams.

“That stayed with me,” she says. “And when I began working with North Don River Valley Midwifery Care, and they expressed that they worked in close collaboration with NYG’s birthing teams, I felt really confident about the next steps of the journey.”

A Seamless Partnership When Plans Changed

As her pregnancy progressed, it became clear that Emily’s baby was not in a head-down position, meaning a C-section would likely be required unless the baby turned. What happened next reflected something distinctive about care at NYG: a seamless and unusually close partnership between the hospital’s Birthing Centre team and community midwives.

Working in lockstep, they quickly connected Emily with an obstetrician to explore whether a specialized procedure to gently turn the baby — could be considered.

Emily says the NYG obstetrician took time to understand her birthing goals and carefully walk her through each option. Together, supported by a team aligned around her preferences, they decided to attempt the procedure — hopeful it would guide the baby into the correct position.

“During the procedure, everyone knew their role,” Emily recalls. “It felt calm. I never felt rushed.”

The intervention a success, Emily went on to deliver on her due date, labouring at home for as long possible before arriving at NYG’s Baruch/Weisz Labour & Delivery Unit.

Designed for moments that matter

When she and her husband welcomed baby, delivered smoothly by her midwifery team, Emily describes that first meeting point as a ‘beautiful, spacious delivery suite’ — one of several that have been recently updated as part of an ongoing, top-to-bottom transformation of NYG’s Birthing Centre.

“I genuinely felt like the space around me matched that care —it felt warm and inviting and really, the closest I think you can get to home in a hospital setting.”

That feeling is no accident. The extensive update, powered by community support, has been designed to support comfort, clinical flow, and recovery — for both parent and baby — while creating an environment that feels warm and personal.

But while much of this vision is already taking shape —NYG’s Birthing Centre Revitalization is not quite at the finish line. With continued support, we can complete the revitalization and ensure more families experience care that feels just as safe and supported as Emily’s.

“I was so impressed by everyone I encountered throughout my birthing journey at NYG says, adding that her family and baby are all doing very well. “Knowing NYG was, and is, here for me and my family — ready, compassionate, and truly listening — it’s just so reassuring.
