Donors support vital equipment for NYGH’s maternal newborn unit

Over the past three years, we’ve been able to purchase a new C-MAC video laryngoscopy system, four halo bassinets, and two birthing suite exam lights.

Since North York General Hospital opened more than 50 years ago, the hospital has supported more families along their birthing journey than any other community hospital in Ontario. That’s why we are the largest and most comprehensive maternal and newborn program at a community academic hospital in the province.

Philanthropy has helped fund vital equipment used in the Maternal Newborn Unit. Over the past three years, we’ve been able to purchase a new C-MAC video laryngoscopy system, four halo bassinets, and two birthing suite exam lights.

This advanced technology, which consists of a high-resolution colour screen and a separate small flexible camera, aids in the insertion of a breathing tube for babies who are unable to breathe on their own. The camera is inserted into the airway by an anesthetist or paediatrician and provides the clinician with a better view of the baby’s internal anatomy and vocal cords, making it easier to insert the tube.

Birthing suite lighting system

These high-intensity lights, which are installed in the ceiling of our birthing suites, allow for optimal lighting during deliveries and for care providers to perform any needed interventions post-delivery.

Each system includes two high-intensity lights, which are mounted on the ceiling of the suites. The labour and delivery team can manipulate the lights into a specific position with the use of a hand-held wand.

The new lights ensure the physician has proper visualization of the baby for a safe delivery and for repair of any delivery tears. Proper post-delivery repair of tears is important to reduce the birthing parent’s pain, prevent incontinence, and avoid complications in future pregnancies. The new lights are essential equipment to ensure our birthing parents receive safe care, both during and after delivery.

As the hospital supports the births of approximately 4,800 babies each year and is one of the busiest single-site delivery centres in Ontario, the delivery room lights are used on a daily basis.

Halo Bassinets - These moveable and adjustable top-of-the-line bassinets are replacing the old stationery wooden versions, allowing families to keep their newborns close and recover during the critical time after birth. The bassinets can be wheeled over to the bed, enabling a new parent to cuddle and feed their baby easily, or to another area of the room where a family member can watch over the baby. This equipment is making a profound difference for families during the post-partum period.
