NYGH’s birthing centre here to welcome new generations, says OBGYN

Dr. Sabrina Lee knows the importance of equitable and accessible care for all families, particularly those on their birthing journey. As an obstetrician gynecologist (OBGYN) at North York General Hospital (NYGH) for 15 years, she’s not only providing world-class care for some of our youngest patients, she has also received care and support from her trusted colleagues at NYGH.

It all started more than four decades ago, when Dr. Lee began her life journey at the hospital.

“I was born at North York General and have spent my life growing up in the city. There is something to be said about North York — a sense of family that radiates through our community. I experienced it growing up and continue to feel it today, while serving our diverse population,” she reflected.

Dr. Sabrina Lee knows the importance of equitable and accessible care for all families, particularly those on their birthing journey. As an obstetrician gynecologist (OBGYN) at North York General Hospital (NYGH) for 15 years, she’s not only providing world-class care for some of our youngest patients, she has also received care and support from her trusted colleagues at NYGH.

It all started more than four decades ago, when Dr. Lee began her life journey at the hospital.

The love of community and NYGH’s exceptional care were forefront when Dr. Lee made her decision to welcome both her sons at the hospital, 11 and 13 years ago respectively.

“I have a great respect for the hospital,” she said. “But I think it’s a testament that we provide exceptional care. And I would put my life in the hands of my trusted colleagues, knowing they could manage it appropriately. I knew I wanted to have a positive birthing experience and that’s why I chose NYGH.”

But what exactly makes exceptional care, explained Dr. Lee, is the unison of so many characteristics.

“I think when people talk about medicine there is an art and science behind it. There’s the clinical knowledge, the procedural technicity, and I know people are so skilled, but it is also significantly the compassion surrounding it,” she said.

Compassion and unrivalled bedside manner are part of NYGH’s reputation. Selecting a birthing hospital can be a stressful and confusing process for any family, but NYGH has been a chosen destination for almost 5,000 families each year. From countless cultures and traditions, these families have experienced expert and compassionate care. The time is now to upgrade our facilities to match our outstanding quality of care.

As the population of Toronto steadily grows, we must look ahead to what’s next and how we can continue our track record of exceptional care throughout the birthing journey. NYGH is looking to integrate and modernize its aging Labour & Delivery and Post-Partum units into a modern integrated space. NYGH’s Post-Partum Unit has not received any substantial updates since the hospital opened in 1968, and our Labour & Delivery Unit has aged since its opening almost 20 years ago.

Our goal is to raise $32 million for this new centre, and to get there, we need the support of our community. Dr. Lee understands the role philanthropy has played at NYGH and the tremendous difference it has made for patients and their families. So much so that she herself has been a loyal monthly donor for several years.

“A birthing centre isn’t just a building, it’s a space where our diverse population comes to embark on a new chapter in their lives. By being able to support all cultural needs, in a space that is designed with the latest technology, like enhanced security, we are ensuring we provide a place that families can continue to trust for generations to come,” she explained.

“Just like my family has chosen to do.”
