Women caring for women at NYGH

Each and every day across North York General Hospital (NYGH), inspiring women are hard at work making a difference for our patients and their families. This International Women’s Day (IWD), we are celebrating the impact of female leaders by shining a spotlight on some of the incredible work being done by women, for women in our Maternal and Newborn program. As experts in the community for more than 50 years as the largest single site birthing program, these fearless women have seen it all.

“I think every woman who comes in to Labour & Delivery is a superwoman. The delivery process is both physically and emotionally challenging. For the first baby, labour can often last 12 to 24 hours. Women need to draw on their strength to go through the pain of contractions, but I’m always inspired by their determined mindset and their excitement to meet their baby. It’s a privilege to be part of these women’s journeys during a life-changing moment.”

“Our Labour and Delivery nurses are more than just colleagues; we are a second family. I’ve been an L&D nurse at NYGH for 15 years, and I stay because of the amazing team I work with every day. We trust each other implicitly, especially in pressure-filled situations. During delivery, a patient can be pushing and in the blink of an eye something goes wrong, and everyone needs to move to the operating room quickly to do a C-section. We all understand what is happening and work together seamlessly as a team to ensure a safe delivery for mom and baby. It’s a good feeling.”

The Future of Care for Women and Families

Chances are, you or someone you know has been born at NYGH. That’s because we’ve been there for over 300,000 births since we opened, supporting more families along their birthing journey that any other community hospital in Ontario. In the last 50 years, our expertise has increased profoundly. But our Post- Partum Unit has not received any substantial updates since the hospital opened in 1968, and our Labour & Delivery Unit has aged since its last renovation almost 20 years ago. Our aging physical space does not reflect the modern standard of comfort that our mothers, babies, and families need and deserve.

To meet these and other urgent needs, we are raising $22 million to transform our aging Labour & Delivery and Post-Partum Units into a modern, integrated Birthing Centre:
