North York General (NYG) is entering the most ambitious and transformational period in its history.
Recognized as Canada’s #1 community hospital by Newsweek for seven consecutive years, we are proud of our legacy—but even more energized by our vision for the future.
At the heart of our transformation is a modern new Patient Care Tower, being built in collaboration with the Government of Ontario, designed to meet the growing needs of the communities we serve.
This new development is part of a major capital expansion at NYG that will expand our capacity, modernize care environments and create an integrated Campus of Care that supports people at every stage of life.
At its core, the New Patient Care Tower will usher in a new era of care for the community, with:
more seniors projected by 2040. NYG’s area has the highest proportion of seniors in Toronto
more Ontarians will have one or more chronic conditions by 2040
of our local population are immigrants, a group disproportionately at risk of chronic disease
The population in NYG’s area is projected to grow to this amount by 2035
of people in North York are a visible minority
of North York residents are low income which is a social determinant of health
Building for the Future:
Meeting the Needs of a Growing, Aging Population
Our communities are changing—the population of North York is aging, growing, and becoming more diverse than ever—with rapid growth expected in the next decade. As these needs evolve, so must our care environments and models of service. Much of our hospital was built in 1968, and many programs operate in spaces no longer suited to today’s standards of care. The need for investment is urgent.

A Once-in-a-Generation Transformation
As care becomes more complex and demand for hospital services rises, NYG must grow to expand capacity and enhance access to timely, safe, and exceptional care. The New Patient Care Tower will be the largest redevelopment in our 57-year history, more than doubling the current area of the hospital. The tower will be designed to be high-performing, accessible, inclusive and fully integrated, delivering purpose-built, future-ready space to support advanced care delivery and innovation.
The new tower will include:
317 private rooms for medical, surgical, critical care, and mental health patients, each with a private ensuite washroom, maximizing comfort, dignity and privacy, and enabling patients to isolate, if needed
A cutting-edge Emergency Department, including a Medical Imaging Satellite, enhancing our ability to provide industry-leading emergency medicine
8 new state-of-the-art operating suites, featuring surgical innovations such as robotic assisted surgery
An expanded Critical Care Unit providing high quality, people-centred care to critically ill patients
A Birthing Centre, including a new Neonatal Intensive Care Unit to care for NYG’s tiniest patients
Expanded Medical Imaging services including a new MRI, new angiography suite and 2 new CT scanners
Inpatient mental health units for children, youth and adults, with dedicated outdoor spaces to provide patients with a calming natural setting to assist with treatment
A low carbon, resource-efficient, climate-resilient, LEED Silver Certified facility, including new flood protection provisions
Digitally integrated, sustainability-focused spaces designed for operational efficiency
The highest standards of accessibility, ensuring equal access to care for all patients and visitors
Two levels of underground parking that will connect to NYG’s existing building, ensuring seamless integration between new and current facilities
