Shifting the Care Paradigm for Seniors
With the help of our donor community, combined with our vision to enable seniors to live well, NYGH has become a leader in the delivery of compassionate care to our senior population, delivered with unmatched kindness.
Our next chapter in our journey as leaders in seniors care will be one of our most ambitious projects to date – the design and build of a new Long-Term Care (LTC) development, which will include one of the largest Long-Term Care homes in the province. NYGH in collaboration with the provincial government will design and build this landmark development that is anchored on our reputation for excellence in seniors’ care. Our vision is to set a new standard in seniors’ living and care within an urban setting and that the home will be part of a Seniors Community Hub with inpatient, outpatient, and community services across the NYGH campus.
Why NYGH, Why Now
The need for this new model of care for our growing and aging seniors population has never been greater:
- Canada will see a boom in the seniors’ population in the next few decades
- In Ontario, the number of seniors over 65 is expected to double by 2046
- The area served by NYGH is home to the highest proportion of seniors in Toronto and Central Ontario and includes some of Toronto’s fastest-growing neighbourhoods.
NYGH is driving a new narrative on how seniors care should be practiced in the community, in the hospital and in a residential setting. With our deep experience in geriatric care, we are national leaders in providing seniors with the care they want and deserve.
Our Vision: The New NYGH Long Term Care Development
Built through a unique partnership with the Ministry of Long-Term Care and the Ministry of Health, the NYGH Long-Term Care Development aims to house a hub of dedicated health and wellness services for seniors, located on the NYGH campus, right across the street from the hospital.
The LTC home will feature:
- 528 beds, one of the largest new, single-site LTC homes in Canada
- All private rooms and private washrooms in a small-scale home-like environment
- Hub of community services including retail and medical services along Esther Shriner Boulevard with street trees and planters will create a welcoming and pedestrian-focused environment
- The tower will be built around two large courtyards for residents, allowing for natural light to shine into interior spaces
- Covered pick-up and drop-off area will be accessible via the new laneway, connected to the hospital, Leslie Subway and the relocated Oriole GO Station

The Power of Philanthropy
Funding from the government allows for a solid foundation for a modern care centre for seniors. But to fully realize our vision rooted in best practices for safety, privacy, dignity and wellness, private support is vitally important. Only through philanthropy can we realize our vision of an advanced and integrated seniors’ centre within arm’s reach of the hospital.
