Cancer patient finds bright light and hope through NYGH comprehensive care

Since undergoing breast cancer surgery more than two years ago, Jocelyn Sanchez is getting a new lease on life.

After being diagnosed with cancer in February 2021, Jocelyn’s family doctor referred her to the Cancer Care specialty team at North York General Hospital (NYGH), one of the largest in the Greater Toronto Area – and since then, she hasn’t looked back.

But with a successful surgery behind her, Jocelyn had another hurdle to face: she was at-risk for heart complications and received treatment through NYGH’s Graham & Audrey Rosenberg Family Cardiac Care Clinic with Dr. Randi Rose, a Cardiologist dedicated to Cardio Oncology and improving patient outcomes.

Caring From the Heart - Dr. Randi Rose, Cardiologist

When I was first diagnosed with breast cancer, I was very, very scared. Cancer runs in my family – I know the horrible cost of it. But I was so lucky to have received care from NYGH, including Dr. Rose for my heart issues. I feel like I’ve known her forever. She is kind, compassionate and honest with her patients – and that’s what important to me,” Jocelyn reflected.

In addition to Dr. Rose’s incredible patient centered care, Jocelyn said there was a village of health care professionals who supported her and set her on a renewed pathway.

“From Dr. Rose, to Dr. Fahima Osman and to all the nurses and staff, their bright smiles, friendly faces and welcoming ways have lifted my spirits and set me on the road to a better tomorrow.”

Today, Jocelyn is happy to report she is cancer-free, and is encouraging others to get regular mammograms. She continues to be monitored, but can breathe a sigh of relief.

“NYGH provides the best care. I wouldn’t have wanted to be anywhere else but here.”

More about cardio oncology

Cardiotoxicity is now recognized as a leading cause of illness and death in cancer patients. Recognizing this challenge, Dr. Randi Rose’s practice at NYGH specializes in Cardio-Oncology; the care of cancer patients with cardiovascular disease that was already existing or acquired during cancer treatment. It also involves the prevention, early recognition, and mitigation of the effects of cancer therapy on the cardiovascular system. Through her work, Dr. Rose is changing the game for cancer patients by improving health outcomes before, during, and after cancer treatment, and finding solutions to prevent devastating heart failure before it starts.
