Your Impact on our Most Urgent Needs

Imagine a cancer care patient arriving for chemotherapy or a neighbour who has been admitted to the hospital with severe pneumonia or an elderly resident at Seniors’ Health Centre who has a urinary tract infection. All these patients rely on North York General when they need it most, and our care teams race against time to provide exceptional care using equipment funded by donors. Each year, donors support essential new and replacement equipment throughout the hospital. In the following video Seanna Millar, President & CEO of NYGH Foundation, is excited to show you how your support has funded vital pieces of equipment including a new bladder scanner and ventilator. Below the video, you can also read about two additional high priority needs that you contributed to this year.

Hospital Beds

Every patient wants to feel comfortable and secure during their stay in the hospital. Each hospital bed becomes a critical component of care, as it provides a source of comfort during a time that can be filled with anxiety. Once again, NYGH was able to purchase new beds for the cancer care program, replacing ones that were 15 to 25 years old. Cancer patients who require inpatient care are typically quite frail and prone to the development of pressure skin ulcers. These new beds are equipped with advanced features to improve safety and comfort, including a mattress to help reduce the possibility of skin ulcers, real-time incontinence detection to reduce patient exposure to moisture, continuous heart rate and respiratory rate monitoring, verbal safety prompts, and caregiver alerts to prevent falls.

PowerChart Oncology System

Donor support has enabled the hospital to purchase a module within our integrated electronic medical records (EMR) called PowerChart Oncology for the Cancer Care Program. Designed specifically to support the care of cancer patients who are undergoing chemotherapy, the application enhances safety by providing a single integrated resource the entire care team can use to access patient information. Within the application, for example, a physician can order chemotherapy medication and a pharmacist can fulfill the order (eliminating the need for transcription, where an error could occur). Clinical staff can also find comprehensive patient information, including: the stage of the cancer, the treatment plan, where the patient is in the treatment cycle, lab results, diagnostic imaging, and patient appointments. The system, which is expected to be implemented early in 2025, will be used for the approximately 320 patients a week who undergo chemotherapy treatment ay NYGH.
