Aleen’s Story: Discovering A Home Filled with Kindness

North York General is one of the first hospitals in Ontario to own and operate a long-term care home: Seniors’ Health Centre (SHC). Not only do the residents reflect the cultural diversity of the community, but the staff do as well. The affiliation with NYGH means that residents in the 192-bed home can be quickly transferred to the hospital (which is nearby) if there are any medical concerns. For Seniors’ Month, we sat down with a vivacious 83-year-old resident named Aleen, who lives at SHC, to find out what her experience has been like.

I first moved into Seniors’ Health Centre (SHC) two years ago when I could no longer live on my own safely. Though personal support workers were helping me at home, my vision was deteriorating. I was blind in one eye and had minimal vision in the other. I was also living with multiple sclerosis (MS). With these conditions, it was becoming increasingly difficult to do daily tasks and live by myself.

It was time to move to a long-term care home. I wanted to find one where I felt comfortable and confident in the care I would receive. SHC was at the top of my list because NYGH is my hospital.

I lived in the North York community and over the years, I received care at the Charlotte & Lewis Emergency, and as an inpatient and as an outpatient at NYGH. During each visit, I felt grateful to receive high-quality, compassionate care. I was confident that SHC would provide an equally high standard of care. It also helped that my granddaughter gave SHC a stamp of approval after taking a tour. So when space became available, I moved in.

Even though I didn’t know anyone when I arrived, I soon became friends with other residents, and close with the staff. I am a social person, and my friends remark that I have a natural warmth and a good sense of humour. In the summertime, I like to sit out on the patio engaging in conversation, discussing current events, and telling stories about my younger days in Jamaica.

The staff here really go above and beyond for the residents to make us feel valued. For example, Winsome, an incredibly kind Resident Assistant, comes to braid my hair on her own time during her work break, just because it makes me happy. And another Resident Assistant with a remarkably calming presence named Vicky makes me feel comfortable when she provides care.

I am partial to island cuisine, and when I attended a food committee meeting and requested jerk chicken, rice and beans, I was thrilled to see it was later incorporated into the menu. During Black History Month, I got to enjoy ackee and saltfish, and fried dumplings. I really appreciate SHC’s efforts to accommodate cultural preferences.

Although I wouldn’t describe myself as someone who regularly joins group activities, I like to listen to the volunteer musicians who perform on my floor and in the solarium on the third floor. A recent performance of flute, piano and violin was particularly entertaining.

Aleen enjoys relaxing in front of soothing plants

Annie, our Activities Coordinator, is encouraging me to join an upcoming resident outing to Rosetta Gardens for an afternoon or a day trip to Edwards Gardens. I didn’t think I’d be able to go because of my vision, but she reassured me that a resident assistant would accompany the group and provide support. I used to love going to Edwards Gardens and it would be so nice to smell the flowers again.

SHC has really grown on me. I’m really comfortable now in my new home, I have wonderful friends, and I’m grateful for all the support I receive.

Aleen, A thankful resident
