When Roshan Doctor arrived in Canada as a young immigrant from India, she couldn’t have imagined the life that lay ahead — raising two daughters, building a new future in Markham, and eventually becoming a proud grandmother to five.
As she emerged from sedation after her procedure, she caught her husband’s eye and instantly sensed the gravity of the news.
Every monthly donor has a story behind their generosity. For Tasmin, it began in the NICU at North York General, where her then-tiny son received life-saving care:
We first met Marissa D’Souza in August 2024, when she had — in her own words — “practically moved into” North York General’s Labour & Delivery Unit.
“I love the hospital and the people who work there,” she says. “It’s such a close-knit, family-oriented place. I knew that when the time came to give birth to my first child, I wanted to do it here. I just feel so comfortable at NYGH.
“My parents immigrated to Canada from Hong Kong in 1991 — and shortly after, I was born at North York General (NYG). Two years later, so was my younger brother Ivan.
“That moment really stayed with me,” she says. “It was in a space most people don’t even know exists. But even there, people were lifting each other up.”
